Former Georgia State infielder and relief pitcher Matt Rose was drafted two weeks ago by the Chicago Cubs in the 11th round of Major League Baseball’s Amateur Draft.
Last Night, Rose made his professional debut with Chicago’s Class A minor league affiliate- the Eugene Emeralds in Oregon. Rose batted fourth in the line-up as the team’s designated hitter, and shook off any rookie jitters by collecting his first hit as a professional in the fourth inning of a 7-1 victory over Tri-City. Matt Rose went 2-4 on the night and also hit his first RBI.
While at Georgia State, Rose was named an All-American Freshman (2013), a Pre-Season All-American (2015) and an All-Sun Belt Conference First Team player (2015). Rose left Georgia State after his junior season ranking seventh in school history for both saves and home runs. In 2015, Rose was among the top home run hitters in Division I Baseball for most of the season and finished the year in the top 10 with 16 long balls. To keep perspective of the home run total, Rose hit more home runs than other junior in the country, including number one overall pick and former Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson.
Rose was one of two Panthers to be selected in this year’s draft. 6’8” right-handed Pitcher Nathan Bates is currently in Utah, playing for the Anaheim Angels Rookie League Affiliate Orem Owls where he made his debut last Monday and pitched two scoreless innings. Bates was named Sun-Belt Conference Pitcher of The Week twice during the 2015 season and was tied for most wins on the Panthers as well.
